“Unequal Scenes” uses a drone to illustrate the inscribed history of the world in a new way. The scars within our urban fabric, so apparent from above, can provoke a sense of surprise, at the same time they reveal our complicity in systematic disenfranchisement.

The oppressive history against people of color, and particularly against Black people in our country, has systematically disadvantaged our most vulnerable populations economically, socially and educationally. Because of the ways public institutions have failed to acknowledge and address the complex and problematic histories of our country, we believe that education, in all the ways it manifests within our college, plays a powerful and necessary role in challenging and dismantling systemic racism.

WIELS is a partnership between faculty members in the Leadership and Educational Studies at Appalachian State University and practicing educators. Our mandate is the development of an 'armoring process' that will equip women with pragmatic knowledge, skills, and dispositions that prepare them for success as educational leaders.

Symposium presenters will be discussing a variety of topics including science, technology, business, education, music and politics and is an opportunity for faculty, staff and students to share their global work on a professional platform while simultaneously contributing to global learning at Appalachian.
